Gardener Quotes

In the News

"The earth heals souls...The garden feeds people in a multitude of ways."

"When we see our neighbors there, and visit with them, it makes us feel closer as a family because we are interacting more with the people of our community, and growing things together—sharing this essential part of human existence together."

"People need a place to go... People need a sanctuary."

"It is an inspiring place not only for those who garden, but for the community as well. As the city becomes more and more supportive and active in sustainability, I think community gardens speaks to that mission incredibly well."

"There is still a heart beating in the middle of the city."

WCG must raise funds and complete an offer to purchase the property by early 2008 to save the garden from demolition. The purchase of the garden at 553 South 400 East, known as the 4th East Garden, will ensure WCG and community members a place to continue to provide urban green space, access to healthy food for low-income individuals, and community development and education for Salt Lake City residents.

The land is one of few remaining pieces of open space in downtown Salt Lake, and WCG is excited about this opportunity to conserve the garden, soil, and community that has been cultivated, served and loved by many for over 25 years.

Why We Need to Buy the Garden Now

While the garden has been managed by WCG for many years, the property on which it lies has always belonged to a private landowner, from whom it was leased. In late 2006, WCG attempted to purchase the property, but was outbid in the landowner's desire to sell for its highest value. The buyer, the Community Development Corporation of Utah, kindly extended the garden's lease for one year, and has just recently given us a second chance at saving the 4th East garden.

By purchasing the property, we can continue the unique legacy of the garden to serve the community as a vibrant, green oasis providing access to healthy food for low-income individuals, a community gathering space and sustainable gardening opportunities and education for Salt Lake City residents.
